What seats did you sit in during your placement?
During the placement you sit in two different seats, one in the first week and one in the second week. In my first week I sat in Commercial, Corporate and Projects, and in my second week I was in Environment and Planning. They were both really enjoyable.
What were your first impressions of the Firm?
My first impression of the Firm is that it’s incredibly supportive and structured. The whole placement was set out in a very structured format and everyone was given ‘buddies’ and supervisors. It was also very friendly and everyone at the Firm was very approachable.
Describe the work you were involved with?
During my summer placement I was involved in quite a wide range of work and projects. I did quite a lot of research projects and we were also allocated a presentation project which we presented at the end of the two weeks to a range of partners and associates. One particular project that I was involved in at my time in Environment and Planning was a research project on a client which was really interesting, as I got to learn a lot about the client and the law related to the issue that was being put forth.
Can you describe the culture at Taylor Wessing?
The culture at Taylor Wessing is really very friendly and I also found it to be quite ambitious. The people at the Firm are always looking to how they can grow and develop the Firm and how they can push it further, and that was something that was really attractive to me.
What are the people you worked with like?
During my two weeks at Taylor Wessing, I came across a wide range of people, from partners to associates and paralegals to secretaries. Everyone was really lovely. Everyone was so friendly and approachable. In my first week, I was sitting with a partner and she was always very chatty, open and friendly, and the buddies and supervisors were all really approachable.
What advice would you give a summer placement student at Taylor Wessing?
To somebody who’s been accepted onto a summer placement at Taylor Wessing, I would advise them to firstly get involved in everything that Taylor Wessing offers. The Firm really provides a lot of opportunities for the summer placement students, such as going to their Pro Bono night at Blackfriars. That’s something that people should really get involved with and really take the opportunities that are given to them. Secondly, I would say they should talk to people as everyone at the Firm is very friendly and they will always give you great advice and push you in the right direction. Those would be the two main points of the advice I’d give a summer placement student.
What do you achieve from the summer placement at Taylor Wessing?
During my time at Taylor Wessing, I feel as though I really achieved a true sense of what a trainee actually does at a mid-sized, full service City law firm. I’ve really understood their day-to-day role and how they operate, and that’s really what I came to Taylor Wessing to do.
How would you sum up your time on the summer placement scheme at Taylor Wessing?
My time at Taylor Wessing was really enjoyable. I got to know a really wide range of people. The Firm put on a number of different evening events, such as bowling and a night at the comedy store, which meant we got to know a lot of people in a completely social setting. I also found that my two weeks were very interesting in terms of the work I conducted. I really got a chance to get involved and finally I found it to be an incredibly productive two weeks. I learnt a lot and met some really good people.
